Cigar wrapper types explained

Updated November 2026

Why the wrapper matters

The wrapper is the outer leaf. It's a small share of the cigar's tobacco, but it shapes the first impression: aroma, sweetness, spice and how the cigar looks and burns.

Wrapper colour, from light to dark

Shade grown vs sun grown

Shade-grown leaf, such as Connecticut Shade, is grown under cheesecloth tents, which gives a thin, smooth, light leaf. Sun-grown leaf gets full sun, which thickens the leaf and usually brings more flavour and colour.

Colour isn't strength

A dark wrapper doesn't automatically mean a strong cigar. Strength mostly comes from the filler, especially ligero leaves from the top of the plant. A maduro can be mild, and a light wrapper can cover a strong blend.

Common questions

Which cigar wrapper is the mildest?

Connecticut Shade wrappers are usually the mildest and creamiest, though the filler matters more for strength.

Is a maduro cigar stronger?

Not necessarily. Maduro wrappers are fermented longer, which usually makes them sweeter and richer, but strength mostly comes from the filler.
